It was a joyous moment as the news of the Supreme Court's verdict supporting local government autonomy circulated throughout the country on the morning of Thursday, July 11th, 2024.
In his conversation with his media aides shortly after the judgment, the former chairman of Isokan Local Government, Hon. Goke Odetunde, lauded and acknowledged the relentless efforts of President Bola Tinubu in making life more comfortable and peaceful for Nigerians. He emphasized that the recent judgment supporting local government autonomy will significantly boost the economic status of the country.
"Local government is the only tier of government that brings democracy down to the grassroots level and enhances mass political participation. Hence, there is a need for people to enjoy the dividends of good governance from the grassroots level. This is a remarkable and landmark achievement from the presidency," Hon. Goke asserted.
Hon. Goke further beseeched the presidency to complement this great achievement by ensuring that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is responsible for the conduct of local government polls in the country. He emphasized that this would protect the people's interests as opposed to the selections done by state governors, which have been detrimental to grassroots politics.
Finally, Hon. Goke Odetunde urged state governments to do everything within their capacity to put smiles on the faces of the people by adhering to the court verdict without any hidden agendas capable of crippling the country's economic status.
"May President Bola Ahmed Tinubu succeed," he concluded.
